Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the main treatments used in our clinic. It is a popular traditional chinese medicine (TCM) approach that has existed since 1000BC.TCM (including acupuncture) involves a holistic approach which uses the body’s natural ability to regain its balance. Single use, very fine sterilized acupuncture needles are used to encourage the flow of QI (also known as Chi). Qi is commonly referred to as the “vital life force”. To get a better understanding of Qi it is best to become familiar with the concept of Yin and Yang. Yin is the type of Qi that is cold, still and dark while Yang is hot, bright and positive. Yin and Yang cannot exist without each other. Through acupuncture we try to achieve or maintain this balance between the two by stimulating the flow of Qi.

Acupuncture for Joint Pains

Through acupuncture, one can manage pain and inflammation. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own healing system by releasing endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. It improves circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids hence delivering more oxygen to body tissue. This helps to eliminate toxins from the body , thus enhancing recovery and rehabilitation.

Acupuncture in Mental Health and General Well-being

Acupuncture is also used extensively in mental health disorders. In our clinic we use it mostly for anxiety, mild to moderate depression, tense muscles, headaches and insomnia. Many patients experience a heightened sense of well being and a deep feeling of relaxation following an acupuncture session. This in turn decreases stress levels and depression symptoms. According to TCM, certain mental health illnesses are commonly caused by blockage of Qi. Since Qi controls spiritual, emotional, mental and physical balance, its blockage results in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Acupuncture aids in keeping the flow of Qi unblocked. It is a superb relaxation treatment. Since it uses the body’s own natural systems it is completely safe. It helps to boost energy levels by relaxing the body and mind getting the body’s Qi balance back to its original form.

Acupuncture and Fertility

Acupuncture is also a gentle, holistic approach to address fertility issues. According to several studies and ongoing research acupuncture can improve fertility by reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and balancing the hormonal system. Ovulatory problems are sometimes brought about by stress which affects the balance between the hypothalamus, pituitary and reproductive glands. This may cause obstruction in the fallopian tubes and uterus which can interrupt movement and implantation of fertilized eggs. In men, stress can affect sperm count, motility and cause impotence. Acupuncture fights the effects of stress and cortisol (stress hormone) by releasing endorphins, therefore addressing a common cause of infertility.
